INDUSTRY SECTOR DYNAMICS

The armored vehicles market is a dynamic and evolving industry, with a range of key trends driving its development and growth. There are several high level themes we hear about in discussions with customers, including:

  • Use of lightweight materials to improve fuel efficiency and reduce costs while still providing a high level of protection
  • Modular design approach to allow vehicles to be customized and adapted for different applications and environments
  • Path toward autonomous systems allowing them to be operated with reduced risk to human operator
  • Use of electric power reduce fuel consumption and improve environmental sustainability
  • Integration of digital technologies including the use of advanced sensors and cameras for situational awareness, as well as advanced communication and control systems that allow for real-time monitoring and response

Instead of enclosed systems, these platforms are increasingly being connected to cloud and/or other vehicles as part of realizing the vision of the connected battlefield. This drives a need for ground vehicles to be resilient against cyber-attacks and less vulnerable in a cyber-contested battlespace, which implies:
  • Ability to send and receive encrypted messages across the vehicle data bus to securely update the firmware of electronic  control units (ECUs)
  • Virtualization of hardware and software ground vehicle components
  • Inclusion of Cross Domain Solutions (CDS), also known as high-speed Guard solutions, are integrated software-hardware systems that make secure access to and exchange of sensitive data possible across networks between various levels of security classification, including incompatible security domains

SOFTWARE CHALLENGES

Delivering this dramatically increased level of complexity and capability while decreasing development cycles creates several challenges for program execution/management offices, chief architects, and P&L owners. The following are solutions to these challenges:

  • Increasing resilience to cyberattack, both in terms of early recognition of system being threatened and in terms of providing a path to return system to a known good state
  • Delivering systems that can be updated in real time
  • Reducing development cycles
