WHAT CHALLENGES WERE BEING FACED?

In the early discussions with the United Technologies Group (announced as being acquired by Raytheon Technologies in June 2019), the problem statement was to consolidate the functionality previously implemented in upwards of 50 microcontrollers into a single unit. The motivations here were the usual SWaP focuses:
  • Size
  • Weight
  • Power

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

This consolidation needed to be performed while maintaining real-time determinism with requirements for extremely small response times for certain system events. There also needed to be a very high level of robustness and system reliability. Finally, the system needed to scale and be customizable for a range of private, commercial, and military use cases that would include semi- and fully autonomous craft.

WHY WAS LYNX SELECTED?

Collins adopted a system architecture supporting three different processor architectures (Arm, Intel architecture [x86] and PowerPC). They determined that the use of bare metal code could address the determinism requirements while offering a reduction in code size. This directly impacts the cost associated with system certification. This platform is still in development and has been selected as part of the Sikorsky FLRAA bid. It is also being reconfigured for use in other commercial and military applications. Learn more by clicking here.

WHAT IS LYNXSECURE?

LynxSecure is a simple and elegant platform technology that controls hardware resources using an intuitive information flow modeling language. It is the foundation of the LYNX MOSA.ic™ framework and was designed to satisfy real-time, high-assurance computing requirements used to regulate military and industrial computing environments, such as NIST, NSA Common Criteria, and NERC CIP.
