Company leverages 12-years experience to make Linux work in embedded market
SAN JOSÉ, Calif., May 8, 2000—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. today announced it has changed its name to LynuxWorks, Inc. to reflect its new focus on bringing the benefits of Linux to the embedded market.
LynuxWorks is leveraging proven technology, 12 years of experience and well-established relationships in embedded systems to address the diverse operating systems needs in telecommunications, networking, office automation, aerospace/defense and process control, as well as emerging Post-PC era applications in the consumer network appliance and related areas.
The LynxOS® real-time operating system (RTOS), the company's Linux-compatible "hard" RTOS, has long served mission-critical applications, such as airline navigation and medical equipment that require the highest levels of performance with less than five minutes of downtime per year. Along with LynuxWorks' BlueCat™ Linux, LynuxWorks' operating systems can now be used to develop and run the invisible computers consumers encounter everyday, such as gas pumps, cable television set-top boxes, and hand-held Internet devices.
"The embedded software world, which is fragmented and populated with proprietary solutions, stands to benefit from the standard, open, multi-vendor solutions provided by Linux, and our full commitment to support it," said Inder Singh, chairman and CEO of LynuxWorks, Inc. "Linux offers developers of embedded systems freedom from being locked into proprietary products, but also offers time-to-market and cost savings benefits of a large number of experienced users, a variety of platforms, a fast-growing tool base, and easy access to thousands of third-party applications."
As Lynx Real-Time Systems, LynuxWorks established leadership in the embedded systems market based on its proven, hard real-time technology in the LynxOS real-time operating system. In November of 1999, the company leveraged that experience with the introduction of a complete Linux environment for the cost-effective development of embedded operating systems—the BlueCat Linux operating system. Customers worldwide can choose Linux compatible LynxOS for industrial-class, mission-critical embedded applications or BlueCat Linux when "hard" real-time isn't required.
LynuxWorks pioneered the adoption of the widely used POSIX® for use in hard real-time software applications with its industry leading LynxOS, and supports UNIX, Java, and other industry standards. LynuxWorks has developed the infrastructure and comprehensive capabilities to address critical issues for embedded systems developers, including:
