Embedded software developers can now create LynxOS applications using Windows 95/NT

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—January 21, 1998—Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc., a leader in embedded software solutions, today announced the availability of the LynxOS® Open Development Environment for Windows (ODE/Windows), which allows programmers to develop embedded software on their Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 host platforms and produce code that targets LynxOS-based systems. ODE/Windows is an additional component within the Lynx PosixWorks development suite. Now, Lynx developers can choose to develop on a UNIX or Windows host cross development platform or they can develop natively on LynxOS.

The ODE/Windows product includes compilers and other development tools which run locally on Win32 systems. Programmers can now use their Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 development platforms to target LynxOS applications running on the following microprocessors: the x86; Pentium and Pentium Pro; the PowerPC family; and the Motorola MPC860 and MPC821 families.

PosixWorks and LynxOS Open Development Environment

PosixWorks is a framework for development of standards compliant, portable software for embedded applications. PosixWorks supports development of UNIX/POSIX®-compatible embedded application software for systems ranging from compact embedded applications to complex, multiprocesser systems. PosixWorks consists of the LynxOS Open Development Environment (for UNIX and Windows), a suite of optional development tools, and networking and multiprocessing products.

The LynxOS Open Development Environment consists of two components: a cross development kit (Solaris, AIX, or Windows), and a scalable LynxOS kernel with four run-time configurations.

LynxOS Open Development Environment For Windows

The Windows cross development kit contains a variety of tools, including such as C and C++ compilers, debuggers, assemblers, linkers, and related utilities. All tools are based on the GNU Toolchain, including C and C++ compilers, and the new Lynx enhanced TotalDb debugger. Also included are target kernel configuration utilities such as mkimage and MasterLynx, which generate LynxOS Kernel Downloadable Images (KDIs) for embedded execution on the target device.

Included in the ODE/Windows is a LynxOS run-time kernel which contains the full run-time kernel (development operating system) version of LynxOS. It also contains the files necessary to create executable images to download and execute on a target system running any one of four run-time configurations of LynxOS and the application. This component includes header files, libraries and LynxOS kernel components that comprise a LynxOS KDI. Samba, which allows developers to mount LynxOS file systems on Windows NT, is also included.

Additional development tools for LynxOS Open Development Environment for Windows include TimeScan 3.0.1 for Win32, an event-based tracing and performance analysis tool that analyzes multiprocess and multithreaded applications.
