Lynx Real-Time Systems Extends Communications Dominance
Ships new SNMP network management software tools based on BMC software, creates business unit for communications, Internet

SAN JOSÉ, Calif., July 29, 1996—Strengthening its leadership position in the communications segment of the embedded systems market, Lynx Real-Time Systems, Inc. today announced shipment of new SNMP network management software tools and the formation of a new business unit dedicated to the communications and internet marketplaces. The new tools are based on the PATROL SNMP Agent Development Kit from BMC Software, Inc.

Without a doubt, the communications marketplace is the fastest-growing and most complex portion of the embedded systems marketplace said Dino Brusco, head of the new business unit. This is largely due to the fact that more and more embedded communications products are being networked and have increasing levels of functionality. Customers with communications applications need SNMP products that allow portable, industry standard methods for applications to query and manage their networked systems.

SNMP toolkit enables more sophisticated communications products

Lynx's new SNMP Master Agent software and SNMP Development Toolkit offerings enable software engineers to develop more sophisticated communications products by greatly accelerating and simplifying the process of building SNMP subagents and management information bases (MIBs). Users of the new toolkit can reduce both time-to-market and also development costs.

Available with the latest release of PosixWorks, Lynx's suite of embedded real-time products, is the SNMP Master Agent software and the SNMP Development Toolkit. These two products result from a joint development agreement with PEER Networks, a division of BMC Software, Inc., which developed the PATROL SNMP Agent Development Kit.

The PATROL SNMP Agent Development Kit is part of the PATROL suite of application and data management products from BMC Software. The Development Kit incorporates an open, multi-MIB architecture. The technology is used by customers and third-party vendors to create master agent and subagents to provide SNMP-based management support for applications and devices across a computing enterprise.

The new SNMP Master Agent software comes free with Version 2.4 of LynxOS Development System. It provides the communications pathway between the Network Manager and the embedded systems MIB.

The toolkit provides a flexible, modular development environment and a high-level API. Unlike competitive offerings, the Lynx toolkit does not require engineers to be well versed in SNMP in order to make it work properly. The toolkit is available now in an early access version for native LynxOS running on x86/Pentium platforms. Source code for both the run-time master agent software and the SNMP Development Toolkit is also available.

In addition to the industry standard SNMP Classic, Lynx's SNMP Master Agent software also provides support for the emerging SNMPv2 standard. LynxOS v2.4 is available for x86/Pentium, PowerPC, Motorola 68K, and microSPARC/microSPARCII. LynxOS v2.4 continues support of microprocessor hardware memory management units.

New Communications Business unit

The new communications tools come out of Lynx's newly formed business unit focused on finding solutions for telecommunications, data communications, networking, and internet customers. Dino Brusco, who will head the new unit, was previously vice president of marketing for the Real-Time Systems Division of Harris Computer Systems Corporation.

The formation of the new business unit is part of a strategic move by Lynx to extend its dominance of the communications marketplace. The company is the industry's leading supplier of embedded operating system solutions for complex communications applications, such as central office switch controls, wireless communications, and ATM switches and routers.
